Frontiers of Medical Robotics: From Concept to Systems to Clinical Translation

Abstract: Medical robotics is poised to transform all aspects of medicine—from surgical intervention to targeted therapy, rehabilitation, and hospital automation. A key area is the development of robots for minimally invasive interventions. This review provides a detailed analysis of the evolution of interventional robots and discusses how the integration of imaging, sensing, and robotics can influence the patient care pathway toward precision intervention and patient-specific treatment. It outlines how closer coupling … Show more

“…ZEUS was used for the first long-distance telesurgical procedure, a laparoscopic cholecystectomy on a French patient in Strasbourg, while the surgeon was located in New York 5 . Another breakthrough was the Da Vinci robotic system by Intuitive Surgery, which is used across different surgical specialties for a variety of surgical procedures and is capable of performing technically challenging procedures 6,7 . Several other robotic systems have now been developed and are commercially available for various surgical procedures across different disciplines (for a review see ref.…”

“…New developments (robotic; virtual methods; 3D MIS; SILS, single-incision laparoscopic surgery; NOTES, natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery) will definitively widen the possibilities of pediatric oncological surgery in the future (50,51). So far robot-assisted solid tumor resections have been used in abdominal, pelvic, thoracic, and neck localization with comparable, to other MIS techniques, rate of conversion to open surgery and tumor spillage (50).…”

“…The tendon-sheath concept has been widely used in medical and other types of robots [10][11][12][13] because of its high transmission precision, light weight, smooth transmission, flexibility, and small size. Kaneko et al 14,15 studied the transmission characteristics of a simple tendon-sheath model for finger joint control.…”
