Front-End Monitoring of the Mutual Inductance and Load Resistance in a Series–Series Compensated Wireless Power Transfer System

Abstract: Abstract--In this paper a new method to estimate the mutual inductance and load resistance in a series-series compensated wireless power transfer system is presented. Reasonably accurate estimations can be obtained from measurements of the input voltage and current obtained at one operating frequency only. The proposal can be used to dynamically monitor both the coupling relationship between the transmitter and receiver coils and the load conditions without any direct measurement on the receiver side. It can a… Show more

“…In order to regulate the output power based on primary-side control method, the load resistance and mutual inductance must be identified throughout the operation. Previous research effort on load resistance and mutual inductance identification utilizing only the primary-side measured variables have been reported in [28][29][30]. The identification method of the load impedance and mutual inductance in steady-state is presented in [28].…”

“…Thus, it is difficult to implement and time consuming. In [30], load resistance and mutual inductance can be estimated simultaneously by the measurement of input voltage and current. Unfortunately, the estimation fails at the resonant frequency due to a mathematical problem.…”

“…In addition, the continuous and discontinuous operation modes will influence the accuracy of the modeling. Reference [24] also studies the identification of mutual inductance and load resistance. These two parameters can be calculated under one operating frequency condition with the front-end monitoring method.…”

“…Similar to [36], the load resistance and mutual inductance cannot be derived at the same time. A method for simultaneously measuring mutual inductance and load resistance of the S-S (Series-Series) topological WPT was proposed in [38]. The frequency scanning was performed near the resonant frequency, and then, the mutual inductance and load resistance were solved from these frequency equations.…”
