From well-entangled to partially-entangled wormlike micelles

Abstract: We combine mechanical rheometry, DWS, and SANS with a simulation model, the “pointer algorithm”, to obtain characteristic lengths and time constants for WLM solutions over a range of salt concentrations encompassing the transition from unentangled to entangled solutions.

“…Finally, since the simulation time unit t is mapped to 2 ms in the real system (see appendix), the longest simulation time we can reach, t = 10 7 t, corresponds approximately to 20 s and is comparable with the duration of recent experiments. 6,38 Simulations are performed with an integration time step equal to 10 À2 t. We have verified that this time step suffices to ensure suitable numerical accuracy in all regimes considered in this study.…”

“…13,43,45,46 They are expected to be ellipsoidal objects with half axes of 13 Â 23 Â 23 Å, in solutions with salt concentrations smaller than 0.5 M NaCl. 43 For the three other surfactants studied in this work, CAPB, 28,31,[47][48][49] CAPOx, and SLS, 47,50 the information available is more limited. We conducted SANS experiments at three different concentrations above the critical micellar concentration (CMC) for each of these surfactants.…”

“…2b and c),the large wide peak suggests the formation of WM in the solution. WMs are entangled in the solution [11], [12], [17], [18], [19] and the particle size that assumed to be spherical particles at DLS analysis [13] differs depending on the degree of their entanglement. This corresponds to the large wide peak over a wide range in diameter.…”
