From vision to narrative: A trial of information-based gorilla tourism in the Moukalaba-Doudou National Park, Gabon

Abstract: African great apes are threatened with extinction by an increasing number of human activities. Along with an increase in the habitat overlap used by local people and great apes, human-great ape conflicts have become intense. Many protected areas have recently been established for the conservation of great apes and other biodiversity in Africa, but difficulties have arisen while adopting the "fences-and-fines" management approach. “…Some of these plants grow in KBNP (Spira et al, 2018) and are consumed by mountain gorillas (e.g., Solanoideae; Rothman et al, 2014; Watts, 1984) or western lowland gorillas (e.g., Laurales; Remis et al, 2001). Other plants, such as Gnetum and Humiriaceae, have not been documented in KBNP but are known western lowland gorilla foods (Rogers et al, 2004; Takenoshita & Yamagiwa, 2008), which is consistent with their significantly higher abundance in the low‐altitude sites of MNP and NCA.…”

“…The successful habituation of a group of western lowland gorillas and implementation of local development projects in the area have provided direct employment and job opportunities to local people (Ando et al, 2008; Matsuura & Moussavou, 2015; Takenoshita, 2015). A locally based non-governmental organization, Protectrice des Grand singes de la Moukalaba (PROGRAM), founded in 2004, has also engaged in conservation and development activities by promoting ecotourism.…”

“…In particular, information in three villages adjacent to the park (Mboungou, Doussala, and Konzi; Figure 1) was collected intensively based on ethnographic research. NM conducted the research in French, which (Ando et al, 2008;Matsuura & Moussavou, 2015;Takenoshita, 2015). is the official language; most villagers including elders can speak it.…”
