From Vico to the sociocultural imagination

Abstract: The papers by Mariagrazia Granatella (2015), Tuuli Pern (2015) and Pablo Rojas (2015), invited by Tateo (2015) engage in a dialogue with the texts of Giambattisto Vico, a philosopher from the 18th century. In this commentary, focusing on imagination, I first follow the authors' effort to show the compatibility between Vico's ideas and current cultural psychology; I then highlight two issues of particular interest emerging from this dialogue. Keywords Vico, imagination, music, body, semiotic mediation Still now… Show more

“…Located in its time, the book contributes to the current rediscovery of imagination by social and cultural psychology, as core dynamic in human development and cultural change (among others, Pelaprat & Cole, 2011; Wagoner, Bresco de Luna, & Awad, in press; Zittoun & Cerchia, 2013; Zittoun & Gillespie, 2016; Zittoun & Glăveanu, 2017). Marková’s reading of Vico thus concurs with and reinforces other current attempts (Tateo, 2015; Zittoun, 2015). The specificity of Marková’s approach is, however, to emphasize the role of “dialogical imagination,” seen as the core dynamic by which we can see, acknowledge, and consider the perspective of the other.…”

“…The original perspective developed by Markova´and her acute search for consistency, allow her to highlight issues and questions currently debated in our field, but also, issues largely overlooked. (Tateo, 2015;Zittoun, 2015). The specificity of Markova´'s approach is, however, to emphasize the role of ''dialogical imagination,'' seen as the core dynamic by which we can see, acknowledge, and consider the perspective of the other.…”

“…Then I have asked selected scholars who identify themselves as cultural psychologists to reflect upon these fresh hints and suggestions (Brinkmann, 2015;Shotter, 2015;Zittoun, 2015). We cannot expect to grasp the wholeness of the experience by segmenting it into basic unit of analysis and then recombine them into abstract categories, for doing so, we fall into the problem of naturalizing those categories and using them back to explain experience.…”

“…For this purpose, I invited three original researcher from philosophy (Granatella, 2015), semiology (Pern, 2015), and semiotic anthropology (Rojas, 2015) to dwell for a bit the intellectual house or palace—that Vico built, and confront with the idea of imagination. Then I have asked selected scholars who identify themselves as cultural psychologists to reflect upon these fresh hints and suggestions (Brinkmann, 2015; Shotter, 2015; Zittoun, 2015). “…It led to a multitude of uses of the distancing notion (elaborated in Glick, 2013, p. 447). Our contemporary focus on imagination (Tateo, 2015, 2016; Zittoun, 2015) and creativity (Glaveanu, 2010, 2017; Glaveanu, Gillespie, & Valsiner, 2015; Tanggaard, 2012) are non-direct extensions of the basic ideas of the differentiation theory of Werner.…”
