From user equilibrium to system optimum: a literature review on the role of travel information, bounded rationality and non-selfish behaviour at the network and individual levels

Abstract: Travel information continues to receive significant attention in the field of travel behaviour research, as it is expected to help reduce congestion by directing the network state from a user equilibrium towards a more efficient system optimum. This literature review contributes to the existing literature in at least two ways. First, it considers both the individual perspective and the network perspective when assessing the potential effects of travel information, in contrast to earlier studies. Secondly, it h… Show more

“…Notably, since road network capacity is limited and insufficient, especially during peak-demand periods, travel times on the shortest routes increase (equation (2)) and drivers seek for more efficient paths. Such adaptive procedure is well represented within the User Equilibrium model (equation (1)), which is broadly defined in the literature; for recent review, we refer to [40].…”

“…As observed by Fonzone (2015) and Fonzone, Schmöcker, and Viti (2016), RTI provision increases the dynamics of passenger choice strategies, expands the set of travel alternatives, induces new decision-making objectives and increases the probability of en-route choice shifts. RTI solutions are widely expected to improve travel conditions as they can help shift the network from user equilibrium towards the optimum state (van Essen et al 2016). The effects of RTI on travel times -a widespread solution in PT systems worldwide -were shown in agent-based PT assignment models (Cats et al 2011;Fonzone and Schmöcker 2014) to have a potentially significant impact upon route choice and output travel utility in different scenarios.…”

“…With the proliferation of vehicle navigation systems and smartphones, each individual can easily acquire the traffic information, which would affect the route selection [45]- [49]. Essen et al insisted that considering both the user behavior and the system performance was important to evaluate how the traffic information notified to users would affect the traffic congestion [45]. To alleviate congestion, Hassan et al proposed a distributed traffic coordination scheme based on the travel information exchanged through the driver's social network [46].…”
