From today's INTRAnet of things to a future INTERnet of things: a wireless- and mobility-related view

Abstract: In this article, we present the current status of the Internet of Things, and discuss how the current situation of many "Intranets" of Things should evolve into a much more integrated and heterogeneous system. We also summarize what in our opinion are the main wirelessand mobility-related technical challenges that lie ahead, and outline some initial ideas on how such challenges can be addressed in order to facilitate the IoT's development and acceptance in the next few years. We also describe a case study on t… Show more

“…For instance, the currently used Internet of Things, which works as a local network of objects such as Machine-to-Machine (M2M), Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), smart homes, etc., can only obtain information from a specific region [34,[38][39][40]. The IoT provides more comprehensive, large-scale, and antique information of the surrounding by collaborating a diverse intranet of things, even though the devices have heterogeneity, local communication protocols, device mobility in the clustering, and different deployment technologies [39,41,42].…”

“…The Internet paradigm is being reshaped to encompass smart objects in addition to human end-devices [2]. As such, the IoT is clearly providing a convergence space for many applications verticals [3], particularly wireless sensor networks (WSN) and machine-to-machine (M2M) communication networks.…”

“…According to various research forecast, the amount of machine type communication (MTC) devices and applications based on long term evolution (LTE) cellular network will boom rapidly over next decade [1,2]. With the widespread deployment of vehicular area network (VAN) and the increasing affordability of MTC smart devices, the scenarios of uninterrupted access services on-the-go on vehicle are booming.…”
