From Theory to Practice: Operationalizing Transformative Mixed Methods with and for the Studied Population

Abstract: This study details the research practices that were developed to operationalize the guiding principles of the transformative mixed methods design. A transformative, explanatory-sequential mixed methods design was utilized to examine the workplace experiences of academic migrants and findings from the study supported better work conditions for the population. Two critical theoretical frameworks were implemented—migrant identity and intersectionality—and the study also illustrates how theoretical frameworks can … Show more

“…Data collection and analysis were conducted sequentially but with equal emphasis on quantitative (observable) and qualitative (narrative) components. Guided by Camacho (2020) and Creswell and Pluno Clark (2011), we operationalized the criteria for transformative sequential explanatory designs for each phase of the study, including problem definition, study design, sampling, data collection, and data analysis and reporting.…”

“…Therefore, researchers gain the responsibility of interrogating whose version of reality is promoted and how power and oppression influence the promotion of that reality (Mertens, 2012). The transformative paradigm has been applied in studies across disciplines including education, healthcare, policy, and sustainability (Camacho, 2020; Canales, 2013; Mertens, 2018; Sweetman et al, 2010).…”
