If the translation of humour may become problematic for a translator, this is particularly so in those cases in which humour is based on culture-bound terms which are not shared by the target culture. The main aim of this paper is to analyse the solutions adopted by the translators into Spanish to deal with culture-specific jokes in the first two seasons of the American TV series Modern Family. Both the DVD dubbed and subtitled versions have been focused on. The approach adopted in this paper is Relevance Theory. From the perspective of this theoretical framework, the translator will resort to different solution-types to try to recreate the cognitive effects intended by the source communicator with the lowest possible processing effort on the part of the target addressee. Different aspects related to the translator' s metarepresentation of the target audience' s cognitive environment, among other factors, will determine his/ her choice of solution-type. Se han analizado tanto la versión doblada como la subtitulada para DVD. El enfoque adoptado en este estudio es la Teoría de la Relevancia. Según este marco teórico, el traductor recurrirá a distintos tipos de soluciones para intentar reproducir los efectos cognitivos que el emisor original intenta transmitir con el menor esfuerzo de procesamiento posible por parte del receptor del texto meta. La elección del tipo de solución adoptado dependerá, entre otros factores, de diversos aspectos relacionados con la metarrepresentación por parte del traductor del entorno cognitivo del público meta.

Relevance Theory (RT: Sperber & Wilson, 1986) argues that human language comprehension processes tend to maximize "relevance", and postulates that there is a relevance-based procedure that a hearer follows when trying to understand an utterance. Despite being highly influential, RT has been criticized for its failure to explain how speaker-related information, either the speaker's abilities or her/his preferences, is incorporated into the hearer's inferential, pragmatic process. An alternative proposal is that speaker-related information gains prominence due to representation of the speaker within higher-level goal-directed schemata. Yet the goalbased account is still unable to explain clearly how cross-domain information, for example linguistic meaning and speaker-related knowledge, is integrated within a modular system. On the basis of RT's cognitive requirements, together with contemporary cognitive theory, we argue that this integration is realized by utilizing working memory and that there exist conversational constraints with which the constructed utterance interpretation should be consistent. We illustrate our arguments with a computational implementation of the proposed processes within a general cognitive architecture.

In this respect, I will use a modified wordplay rendition methodology, which draws on Dirk Delabastita's (1993) competence model and its cognitive-pragmatic reworking advanced by Díaz-Pérez's (2015), and associates the various approaches to pun translation with specific rendition strategies.…”

This article proposes a quantitative analysis of the Romanian translations of 325 ribald Shakespearean puns, which originate in 20 plays and 71 renditions, with special focus on assessing the impact of translator-subjective and objective factors on the rendition process in the pre-communist, communist, and post-communist periods. The findings invalidate several widespread beliefs: Dragoș Protopopescu’s renditions, banned by the communist regime for their ‘modernizing’ approach to the Shakespearean text, bowdlerized more bawdy puns than ‘ESPLA’, which replaced it as the Party-approved Romanian edition of the dramatist’s plays; Adolphe Stern’s translations, harshly criticized in his period, fare better in terms of ribald pun rendition than Scarlat Ghica’s and Dimitrie Ghica’s, hailed as the most successful of their time; modern translations of Shakespeare display a heterogeneous distribution of target-text puns across the surveyed rendition strategies, despite enjoying similar availability of and access to pun translation studies.
