From the organismal to biosphere levels: environmental impacts on the amphibian microbiota

Abstract: This review summarizes the role of environmental factors on amphibian microbiotas at the organismal, population, community, ecosystem, and biosphere levels. At the organismal-level, tissue source, disease status, and experimental manipulations were the strongest predictors of variation in amphibian microbiotas. At the population-level, habitat quality, disease status, and ancestry were commonly documented as drivers of microbiota turnover. At the community-level, studies focused on how species’ niche influence… Show more

“…While we made sure to include only terrestrial forms of Taricha , plethodontids and newts possess differences in skin morphology, behaviour, and immunity that could contribute to variation in the microbial microhabitat of the skin (Jani & Briggs, 2018; Wakely et al, 1966; Walke et al, 2014). In addition, home range and microhabitat use differences among species could account for the patterns of variation observed in the skin microbiota's alpha and beta diversities (Hernández‐Gómez & Hua, 2023). Taricha sp.…”

“…In amphibian species with aquatic larvae, gut microbiota majorly originates from the environment (i.e. water and diet), and the contribution of parental microbiomes was thought to be minor (Hernández-Gómez and Hua, 2023;Prest et al, 2018;Scalvenzi et al, 2020). In this study, amplectant pairs were captured in four different sites then were placed in tank filled with dechlorinated tap water until all females laid their eggs.…”

“…Identifying the determinants of the diversity and function of host-associated microbiota is a crucial focus in microbial ecology. 11 Relevant research encompasses a wide range of organisms, including mammals, 12 , 13 fish, 14 , 15 and amphibians. 16 , 17 Host factors, such as phylogeny, genetics, sex, diet, and age, are well established factors that shape the community structure of host-associated microbiota.…”
