“…In her doctoral dissertation, Atienza (2013) examined the representation of Filipino Americans and concluded that, unlike larger Asian American groups (Chinese Americans, Japanese Americans and Korean Americans), this group is almost non-existent in children’s literature. Besides the lack of gender diversity and representation of multicultural and multi-ethnic interactions, there is also an ongoing criticism that children’s books under-represent children with disabilities, which is an important form of diversity (Beckett et al, 2010; Bland and Gann, 2013; Booktrust, n.d.).
