“…In situ expression of sns confirms its restricted expression in SOPs (Figure 3E), providing evidence that IRM genes participate in the segregation of SOPs from surrounding epithelial cells. Similarly, E-cadherin ( E-cad ) and N-cadherin ( N-cad) are expressed in a non-overlapping fashion that are hallmarks of differential cell adhesion process in Drosophila wing and eye tissues (Classen et al, 2005; Hayashi & Carthew, 2004; Schäfer et al, 2014; Togashi et al, 2024), with enrichment of E-cad expression in the clusters epithelial , socket-building cell and margin , and high expression of N-cad in the SOP cluster. These results suggest that Notch-driven lateral inhibition is coupled with the differential expression of CAMs to drive SOP spacing and specification within the butterfly pupal wing epithelium.…”
