Police communication is a field with unique challenges and specific requirements. Police officers depend on effective communication, particularly in high-stress operations, but current training methods are not focused on communication and provide only limited evaluation methods. This work explores the potential of virtual reality (VR) for enhancing police communication training. The rise of VR training, especially in specific application areas like policing, provides benefits. We conducted a field study during police training to assess VR approaches for training communication. The results show that VR is suitable for communication training if factors such as realism, reflection and repetition are given in the VR system. Trainer feedback shows that assistive systems for evaluation and visualization of communication are highly needed. We present ideas and approaches for evaluation in communication training and concepts for visualization and exploration of the data. This research contributes to improving VR police training and has implications for communication training in VR in challenging contexts.

We present and test a model examining the role of organizational and psychological resources that enable employees’ high-quality service provision in public safety jobs. Through a two-study design conceptualized in the principle of reciprocity of social exchange theory, we recruited 120 firefighters and 119 police officers and found that service quality was positively associated with their trust in the administration, training, and staffing sufficiency. We also found that police officers’ prosocial motivation, as a psychological resource, amplifies the relationship between trust in administration and service quality. The beneficial role of prosocial motivation in police officers’ service quality appears to counter recent research suggesting that prosocial motivation has a dark side in demanding contexts. Our findings contribute to and highlight essential connections between distinct resources that positively impact the service quality of firefighters and police officers in dangerous and emotionally demanding job roles.

Virtual reality is an emerging frontier that offers immersive simulations with the capacity to revolutionize police training. This study evaluated a scenario-based training approach by comparing the delivery of simulations in Virtual Reality (VR) and Live Action (LA). Participation in this mental health crisis response training program in either format led to a significantly greater acquisition of de-escalation competencies compared to a control group. VR format showed comparable effectiveness to the LA format in bringing about improved de-escalation skills through scenario-based training. The training was equally effective across all officer experience levels. The VR group showed a greater reduction in bias towards mental illness compared to the control group. Further, the VR format was found to be no more cognitively demanding than live action. The article discusses the centrality of de-escalation skills in police practice and considers the larger implications of de-escalation training delivered through virtual reality applications for increased consistency, cost-efficiencies, and professionalization.
