From Sam Clemens to Mark Twain

Abstract: Sam Clemens adopted his famous nom de plume while writing for the Territorial Enterprise newspaper in Virginia City, Nevada Territory, during the early 1860s. Reconsidering the available documentation from the time period, including contemporary comments on the nom de plume, provides a revised theory on its adoption.
