From Resveratrol to Its Derivatives: New Sources of Natural Antioxidant

Abstract: Resveratrol, a star natural product from red wine, has attracted increasing attention around the world. In recent years, resveratrol derivatives (including its oligomers) have shown amazing chemical diversity and biological activities. They have been emerging to be promising new sources of natural antioxidant. This review summarizes recent finding on antioxidant activities of resveratrol derivatives and the structure-activity relationship for the first time. Scientific evidences have highlighted their potentia… Show more

“…The second of the possible courses of action of resveratrol stems from the antioxidant properties of this phenolic compound (He & Yan 2013). Infection of wheat plant with powdery mildew causes oxidative stress in cells and results in increased activity of antioxidative enzymes (Kovacs et al 2011).…”

“…Infection of wheat plant with powdery mildew causes oxidative stress in cells and results in increased activity of antioxidative enzymes (Kovacs et al 2011). If the system is unable to control the level of generated reactive oxygen species (ROS), it demands exogenous supplement of antioxidants to scavenge excessive ROS and restores the stable state of cellular 'redox homeostasis' (Foyer & Noctor 2005, He & Yan 2013. In this case, a direct antioxidative effect of resveratrol, resulting from its chemical properties such as the presence of three phenol groups or trans-isomery of the double bound, can be beneficial for the plant (He & Yan 2013).…”

“…The plant has been traditionally used as a sour vegetable ingredient and as a snack. Previous investigations have discovered that some stilbenoids, extracted from Gnetum gnemon, revealed some bioactivities such as antioxidant and UV-B protection [1], antioxidant [2,3], protection against oxidative stress-induced endothelial cell senescence [4], anti-aging [5] and also as a health supplement [2].…”

“…Several antioxidant strategies have been proposed as a treatment approach. Here, we consider resveratrol, a stilbenoid found in the skin of red grapes and other fruits that demonstrates strong antioxidant and neuroprotective properties [98], and dimethyl fumerate, which exterts cytoprotective effects by induction of an antioxidant response [99].…”
