From plot to regional scales: Interactions of slope and catchment hydrological and geomorphic processes in the Spanish Pyrenees

Abstract: 19The hydrological and geomorphic effects of land use/land cover changes, 20 particularly those associated with vegetation regrowth after farmland abandonment were 21 investigated in the Central Spanish Pyrenees. The main focus was to assess the 22 interactions among slope, catchment, basin, and fluvial channel processes over a range 23 of spatial scales. In recent centuries most Mediterranean mountain areas have been 24 subjected to significant human pressure through deforestation, cultivation of steep 25 slo… Show more

“…Gabert and Nicod (1982) (Trimble, 1990;Martínez-Fernández et al, 1995;Ruecker et al, 1998;Gispert, 2006, 2012) and Greece (Kosmas et al, 2000). At the scales considered, soil erosion generally declined after abandonment, as well as the connectivity between sediment sources and channels, with reduced sediment delivery (Hooke, 2006;Lana-Renault and Regüés, 2009;García-Ruiz et al, 2010;Quiñonero-Rubio et al, 2013) and sedimentation in reservoirs (Navas et al, 2011). An exception was some areas of pine reforestation on bulldozed terraces in marly semi-arid areas of south-east Spain, where soil loss increased by 1-2 orders of magnitude (Romero-Díaz et al, 2010).…”
