From Piaget's Epistemic Subject to Pascual‐Leone's Metasubject: Epistemic Transition in the Constructivist—Rationalist Theory of Cognitive Development

Abstract: The explanation of the transition from one epistemic theory to another is an important part of Piaget's genetic epistemology. It is argued that this epistemic transition leads to a retrodictable orthogenetic tendency toward optimizing equilibration. The objective of this paper is to establish a relationship between Piaget's epistemic subject and Pascual‐Leone's metasubject and to demonstrate that the postulation of the latter can be considered as an epistemic transition between two constructivist—rationalist t… Show more

“…More recently, Niaz (1990Niaz ( , 1991aNiaz ( , 1994bNiaz ( , 1994c has argued that Pascual-Leone's theory of constructive operators provides explanatory constructs for understanding the developmental level of students by postulating antecedent variables of M-capacity, cognitive style, and the mobility-fixity dimension. Furthermore, a fundamental assumption of this article is that the postulation of antecedent variables leads to a "progressive problemshift" (Lakatos, 1970) between Piaget's epistemic subject and Pascual-Leone's metasubject (Niaz, 1992).…”

“…Eylon & Linn [ 19881 and Niaz [ 19941 for a critical appraisal). More recently, Niaz (1992) has demonstrated a progressive "problemshift" in the Lakatosian sense between Piaget's epistemic subject and Pascual-Leone's metasubject, which leads to the development of a theory with greater explanatory power. Similarly, Kitchener (1987) considers Piaget's genetic epistemology as a philosophy of science and that, ".…”

“…Niaz (1990Niaz ( , 1993 has presented a considerable amount of empirical evidence to show that antecedent variables (e.g., mental capacity, disembedding ability) based on Pascual-Leone's Theory of Constructive Operators (TCO) provide greater explanatory power for cognitive development and science achievement, which can be considered as an epistemic transition (cf. Niaz, 1991aNiaz, , 1991bNiaz, , 1992) between Piaget's epistemic subject and Pascual-Leone's metasubject. Epistemic transition in this context is considered as a progressive problemshift between the theories of Piaget and Pascual-Leone.…”
