From paper to practice: an initial approach to implementation of the environmental monitoring plan for fish farming proposed by JACUMAR

Abstract: Summary:The Spanish National Advisory Board of Mariculture (JACUMAR) developed an initiative to unify methodologies between the regions of Spain, in which they proposed the implementation of site-specific "Environmental Monitoring Plans" (EMPs). In this study, we tested the feasibility of an EMP on a fish farm in the Mediterranean Sea. The methods and tools proposed in the EMP are highly useful for environmental monitoring of aquaculture. However, spatial heterogeneity figured prominently in a univariate analy… Show more

“…The factor “distance from the cages” was incorporated in two different ways: “discrete distances”, with eight levels (0, 50, 100, 250, 500, 1,000, 2,000 m and Control) and “zone”, with three levels (near, 0–50 m; intermediate, 100–1,000 m; and far, 2,000 m and control). The delimitation of the three zones was based on previous studies performed in the same area (Martinez‐Garcia et al, 2018; Rubio‐Portillo et al, 2019). Changes in bacterial assemblages in relation with distance to the cages were visualized using the ampvis 2 package (Skytte et al, 2018).…”

“…A portion of the surface sediment in each experimental unit (160 cm 3 ) was removed with a syringe for determination of the OM content, the redox potential, accumulation of acid volatile sulphides (AVS) and the NH 4 + and PO 4 3− porewater concentrations. These physicochemical parameters are commonly used for monitoring aquaculture activities [30] and to help us understand the relationship between fauna and sediment [17,19]. The OM content (%) was measured by a loss in the ignition method, at 450 • C for four hours.…”
