“…Due to their simple structure, they are considered an economic structure and are also a powerful solution for the needs of dam projects such as increasing flow capacity or reducing sections dedicated to flood flow. Other benefits of piano key weirs can be: (i) the ability to be constructed on available dams and new gravity dams; (ii) increasing the specific flow of weirs up to 100 m 3 s‾¹ m‾¹; (iii) an increase in flow, at least four times compared to conventional weirs; (iv) raising the capacity of the reservoir of dams; (v) having economic feasibility and low maintenance costs (Schleiss, 2011). Figure 2 shows the plan and profile of the piano key weir with its geometrical parameters.…”

“…In the last decade, the implementation of PKWs in practice has increased significantly, particularly in France (e.g., Laugier 2007, Laugier et al 2009) and presently under construction in Vietnam (Ho Ta Khan et al 2011). Lempérière et al (2011) and Schleiss (2011) presented historical reviews on the evolution from Labyrinth weirs to PKWs, with a focus on the hydraulic characteristics of PKW operation. Note that the standard naming convention for PKWs as introduced by Pralong et al (2011) is applied herein.…”

“…Plan form of these are similar but the apex of PKW is inclined and turns both in up-and downstream directions. In contrast to labyrinth weirs, PKW benefits from having certain overhangs which lead to smaller footprint of the structures [4]. Application of PKWs offers several advantages such as: increasing discharge capacity up to three times in comparison with straight linear spillways, capability of construction on existing and new gravity dams, economical efficiency, less maintenance costs, simple structure and ease of construction [5].…”
