From Folds to Structures, a Review

Abstract: International audienceStarting from simple notions of paper folding, a review of current challenges regarding folds and structures is presented. A special focus is dedicated to folded tessellations which are raising interest from the scientific community. Finally, the different mechanical modeling of folded structures are investigated. This reveals efficient applications of folding concepts in the design of structures

“…Origami lattices are a prototypical metamaterial, readily converting an unwieldy film into a robust device capable of reliable and simple actuation [1]. A remarkably small fraction of a sheet is deformed when it is creased, but the mere existence of a crease dramatically changes its deformation modes.…”

“…The basic ingredient of the proposed origami structure (OS) is an origami sheet that can be folded into exceptionally rich shapes by carefully designing its crease pattern [30][31][32][33][34][35][36], and is composed of inclusions attached either on the facets or vertices of the sheet (Fig. 1).…”

“…However, the abstract idea of folding techniques emerged recently [7], which was also called origami in Japan. The association between origami and mathematics is profound and insightful, hence with the rapid development of computer science, computation geometry folding techniques emerged as a new theoretical field in the last decades.…”

“…Rigid folding is when all the deformation is concentrated in the hinges and the faces between the folds remain flat [7]. For architectural considerations, standard plane materials are important and effective.…”
