From Conventional to Sustainable SHM: Implementation of Artificial Intelligence in The Department of Civil Engineering, University of Malaya

Abstract: Computer-based technologies and their applications pervade everywhere in real life, especially in different fields of civil engineering. For example, conventional structural health monitoring (SHM) has been rapidly upgraded to sustainable SHM using artificial intelligence. It is because conventional approaches are challenged by real-time, low-cost, and quality-guaranteed SHM. In this direction, a number of innovative researches have been carried out in the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Malaya.… Show more

“…Since FE models are simplified representations of the actual structure (materials, geometry, boundary conditions, etc. ), model predictions may be erroneous and differ from the actual behavior of structures [ 344 ]. With the availability of continuous monitoring data, an FE model can be continuously updated to provide a time-based evolution of the structural model.…”

“…Figure 1 shows a few examples of bridge strengthening using CFRP. As mentioned, new tools and technologies can also be adapted to design new bridges and assess and retrofit existing bridge structures [20,21]. Figure 2 shows the utilization of advanced tools and techniques in damage assessment of a slab-on-girder bridge structure utilizing the structural health monitoring (SHM) approach.…”

“…Such engineering structures enrich the lives of human beings and bring convenience to transportation, business activities, and other human-being social activities. However, accompanying the service time increase, external forces and environmental factors are continuously applied to the structures, leading to internal damage or failure occurring in the hidden place of the structures [1,2]. The internal damage will further cause the collapse and threaten the safety of users.…”
