From Carper's patterns of knowing to ways of being: An ontological philosophical shift in nursing

Abstract: Carper's 1978 article in the premiere issue of Advances in Nursing Science encouraged nurses to consider four fundamental patterns of knowing. Through illustrations from literature and the performing arts, the authors address Carper's patterns of knowing in the context of an emerging philosophical shift. First, they critique the major strengths and limitations of the article. Next, they explore an emerging philosophical shift in nursing from Carper's epistemological focus to ontological reflections on ways of … Show more

“…While epistemology is concerned with the structure and dependability of knowledge (Silva and Sorrell 1995), ontology is concerned with 'the nature of existence and with the structure of reality' (Crotty, 1998:p10). Constructionists protest against any permanent, homogeneous standards by which truth can be generally known (Denzin and Lincoln 2005).…”

“…In a study on nursing knowledge patterns that can be considered a model, four levels can be classified: empirical scientific, ethical, personal and aesthetic (16) . Countless researchers have followed this classification of nursing knowledge patterns (17)(18)(19)(20)(21)(22) , from different perspectives, but respecting what is essential in the classification and the principles the same author established. Some years later, a study was published that critically analyzes Carper's contributions, and also manifests the positive aspects of his work, which adds a new pattern -the sociopolitical -which supposes, in line with Heidegger's concept of being "there", developed in "Being and Time", taking the historical, geographic, ideological and sociocultural context into account in the ways knowledge is structured (23) .…”

“…The four patterns are empirical (theory, evidence), esthetic (sensation/ caring), personal knowledge (self), and ethical (doing the right thing). Silva, Sorrell and Sorrell (1995) critiqued Caper's article related to knowledge development and offered two additional patterns of knowing -inexplicable and unknowing.…”
