Fringe-adjusted joint transform correlation

Abstract: Improved correlation discrimination is achieved by using a fringe-adjusted joint transform correlator (JTC). This technique is found to yield significantly better correlation output than the classical and binary JTC's for input scenes involving single as well as multiple objects. It also avoids the computation-intensive Fourier-plane joint power spectrum binarization processing of a binary JTC. Two optical implementations for the proposed technique are also suggested.

“…Optical axis alignment, as being the major disadvantage of (VLC), generates the occurrence of the amplitude joint transform correlator (AJTC). This correlator is based on the 4f Vander Lugt correlator, but uses a joint image to alleviate the optical axes alignment (Abookasis et al, 2001;Alam & Karim, 1993a …”

“…Some useful work has been done to solve these problems. Phase and amplitude threshold and fringe adjustment in the spatial or Fourier domains are the most typical methods [8][9][10][11].…”

“…However, most attempts are divided into two groups, one group uses an intensity or a phase threshold and the other group uses some kinds of filtering. Karim successfully applied the synthetic discrimination function (SDF) filter concept to a JTC system and use a Fourier plane image subtraction technique [13][14][15]. Although this technique successfully improved the correlation peak and reduced the side-lobe noise, it adopts a simple image normalization and filtering process or spatial domain iterative filtering process.…”
