Friction Modifiers Optimization on Tribological Properties of Non-asbestos Organic (NAO) Brake Pad by DoE-Taguchi Method

Abstract: Friction modifiers play an important role in modifying the friction performances on the brake pad material. This study aims to determine the optimal friction modifier composition for obtaining a high friction coefficient (CoF) stability and low wear with the Taguchi method. Taguchi's L8 orthogonal array consists of five factors, and two levels were used to design and perform the experiment. The tribological properties (CoF stability and wear) were tested using the JF160 Chase friction tester according to the S… Show more

“…For practical applications of the friction material in the car industry, many brake pad manufacturers add metal sulfides such as MoS 2 , FeS 2 and Sb 2 S 3 as lubricating components because graphite alone as a lubricating component causes a lack of stable friction coefficient at various temperatures (Sathickbasha et al. , 2021; Jamasri et al. , 2021).…”

“…To balance the overall content of the friction material with changes in the FeS 2 content, adjustments were made to the filler component, which was considered to have a minor influence on the friction material properties. For practical applications of the friction material in the car industry, many brake pad manufacturers add metal sulfides such as MoS 2 , FeS 2 and Sb 2 S 3 as lubricating components because graphite alone as a lubricating component causes a lack of stable friction coefficient at various temperatures (Sathickbasha et al, 2021;Jamasri et al, 2021). The lubricant component, which is the main focus of this study, is considered to maintain stable friction coefficients and enhance wear resistance, and the solid lubricant FeS 2 was used in this study (Hu et al, 2012a(Hu et al, , 2012bLi et al, 2023).…”

“…Most of the time authors are selected sliding distance, load, speed, percentage of reinforcement, and friction modifier as operating parameters with their two or three levels. The outputs of all experiments are to study performance parameters like coefficient of friction, wear rate, and specific wear rate (15,16).…”
