Resin-bonded molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) is widely applied as a solid lubricant. However, multiple coatings are usually required to meet other requirements in mechanical systems. In this study, a quenched and tempered AISI 4130 steel was used as the substrate, being shot blasted. Furthermore, three layers were successively deposited: a zinc phosphate layer, a phenolic resin (basecoat), and a topcoat based on MoS 2 . e thicknesses of different layers were obtained by scanning electron microscope and by the ball-cratering method. 3D surface roughness parameters were determined for each step of manufacturing, following three approaches: average values, isotropy level, and distribution of heights. e ball-cratering method was successfully applied for determining the thickness of the zinc phosphate but presented a relative deviation for the others layers. e phosphating step was decisive for the final surface topography of resin-bonded coating in terms of distribution of heights. On the other hand, the isotropy level imposed by the shot blasting of steel was practically unaltered by all manufacturing processes.

A set of temperature-dependent friction coefficients was developed to increase the accuracy of finite element (FE) simulations of cold bolt forging. The initially attained friction coefficients at different temperatures were calibrated with the iterations between the experimental and thermomechanical model extrusion test loads. The constant friction coefficient and the determined set of friction coefficients as function of temperature were then implemented to the simulations of the cold bolt-forging processes. Further calibrations and model validations were made based on the temperature measurements of the workpiece in the actual bolt-forging processes. To show the advantages of developed temperature-dependent friction coefficients, the loads of four different bolt-forging processes were compared with the thermomechanical model loads calculated using the constant friction and temperature-dependent friction coefficients. The modeling results indicated that the use of temperature-dependent friction coefficients in the FE simulations resulted in nearer temperature distributions and the loads of the workpiece during forging as compared with the use of a constant friction coefficient.

There is a need to reduce the friction and to prevent the galling between the galvanised steel and the shaping tools during the metal working process. Zinc phosphate (ZP) coatings are limitedly used as solid lubricant due to intrinsic high‐friction properties. This investigation explores the use of stearic acid overcoat on ZP coatings to produce surface coatings with low friction and high durability. A simple hydrothermal process was developed to fabricate ZP coatings on zinc. A stearic acid overcoat was then deposited on ZP coatings. Infrared microscopy and water contact angle measurements were used to analyse the chemical composition and the hydrophobicity of modified ZP coatings. The tribological behaviour of modified ZP coatings was evaluated by sliding against a steel ball by using a reciprocating ball‐on‐plate tribotester. Tribological results show that stearic acid overcoat on ZP coatings led to a decreased friction with greatly extended life.
