Friction and Wear Properties of Automobile Brake Linings Containing Borax Powder with Different Grain Sizes

Abstract: Borax which is an important boron compound, a mineral, and a salt of boric acid, is used as a fire retardant and insulating material. The most important reac-tion in automobile brake systems is heat generation from friction. The heat gen-erated at the interface of disc and lining may cause deformation of the materials forming the lining. Therefore, phenomena such as lining wear and brake fade may be occurred. The aim of this study is to reveal the positive effects of borax additive on lining and experimentally… Show more

“…In manufacturing parameter optimization; pre-forming pressing time and pressure, hot pressing time-pressure and temperature, curing time and temperature parameters were determined. The experimental parameters specified in this study were determined according to the parameters commonly used in the literature [40][41][42][43][44][45] and the capacities of the devices at the manufacturing process. Manufacturing parameter values are given in Table 2.…”

“…In addition to these strong mechanical properties, basalt fiber reinforced powder alloys also have high sliding wear resistance, high load carrying capacity and low density properties. In this way, they are widely used in automotive and aircraft brakes [9][10][11][12][13]. In addition, due to the high temperature resistance of these reinforced alloys, they are also used in diesel piston engines [14,15].…”
