In recent years, ornamental shrimps gained increasing popularity in the aquarium trade. Unfortunately, they are potential vectors of epibionts, which may be unintentionally introduced to aquaria with imported shrimps. This contribution presents the first report of the occurrence of Holtodrilus truncatus on aquarium freshwater shrimp Caridina formosae. A total of 120 shrimp imported from Taiwan as aquarium pets were examined for the presence of epibionts. Holtodrilus truncatus occurred in 23.3% of shrimps. A total of 29.6% of crustaceans showed signs of damages as a result of H. truncatus activity. The shrimp is not common in the ornamental trade and is not subject to selective breeding. Therefore C. formosae populations available on the market, if not wild-caught, are most likely very similar to those occurring in Taiwanese natural water bodies, where H. truncatus occurs in Neocaridina shrimp. Neocaridina spp. are a known host for this epibiont, and transmission between species might occur in nature as well as in the aquarium trade were densities of animals are often high. The ability of H. truncatus to infect also highly invasive crayfish Procambarus clarkii, might also pose concern for regions where this crustacean is widespread. The actual lack of preventive measures for shrimp epibionts as well as confirmed releases of ornamental crustaceans into new aquatic ecosystems may result in further spread of H. truncatus, a potential new threat to native crustaceans and other epibionts.

Amphidromous shrimps of the genus Caridina (Crustacea: Decapoda: Atyidae) are essential components of the tropical insular freshwater ecosystems. Due to an extremely confused taxonomy, their biodiversity is poorly known, and their conservation status cannot be properly assessed.However, thanks to recent advances of integrative taxonomy, the systematics of this genus progressively becomes clearer, allowing us to draw conclusions about their biogeography and conservation biology. In this chapter, we 1) review the current state of knowledge of amphidromous Caridina diversity in the light of the latest results of integrative taxonomy on this model, 2) review the threats faced by Caridina in Indo-Pacific Islands, and 3) discuss how integrative taxonomy approaches can inform and support programs designed to limit the impacts of threatening processes on the diversity of Caridina. Finally, we provide recommendations for the conservation of these species and their habitats.

Considering the environmental impacts to rivers caused by the exploitation of water resources and the consequences of these impacts upon fauna, the objective of this study was to evaluate the population biology of the shrimp Atya scabra (Leach, 1816) in the final stretch of the major river of South America. This species was assessed as "Near Threatened" in the red book of Brazilian crustaceans. Specimens were sampled monthly from February 2015 to January 2016 in a region of the lower São Francisco River, Brazil. A total of 233 individuals of A. scabra were collected, including 120 males and 113 females (71 non-ovigerous and 42 ovigerous). Atya scabra abundance was higher when water flow values increased. A decrease in abundance was observed over the one year of sampling, indicating a decline of about 90 % in this population in this region of the São Francisco River. We suggest that this decline was caused by the reduction of water flow in the São Francisco River, due to a policy that authorized retaining more water behind dams and releasing less water into the river in April and June 2015. In light of this, other studies should monitor the population dynamics of this species, while legislative actions are also needed to protect this fragile ecosystem.
