Freshwater periphyton response to technical-grade and two commercial formulations of glyphosate

Abstract: A. Glyphosate is the most widely used herbicide worldwide. It may reach water bodies and affect microbial communities. We compared the effects of two commercial formulations and technical-grade glyphosate on a freshwater periphytic community. A laboratory bioassay was carried out with four treatments: technicalgrade glyphosate acid, Glifosato II Atanor ® , Roundup Max ® , at a concentration of 3 mg active ingredient/L, and Control. At 2, 5 and 9 days after herbicide application, pigments concentration, … Show more

“…( Table 4 , Table 5 and Table 6 ). The increased toxicity of the formulations in the presence of formulating agents (e.g., POEA) has already been proven in several studies [ 15 , 77 , 120 , 121 ]. Based on our results, POEA proved to be more toxic than APG ( p < 0.001) ( Table 4 and Table 6 ).…”

“…For example, the determined 72 h EC 50 values are in the range of 24.7–166 mg/L [ 15 , 20 , 73 ] for P. subcapitata , while for Desmodesmus subspicatus higher values were calculated (72.9–166 mg/L) [ 41 , 52 , 74 , 75 , 76 ] during the ecotoxicological testing on the effects of glyphosate. Moreover, potential adverse effects of glyphosate and GBHs were indicated also on freshwater periphyton [ 77 , 78 , 79 ]. Moreover, the increased toxicity of Roundup was demonstrated on cyanobacterial and green algal species ( M. aeruginosa, Nitella microcarpa var.…”

“…Toxicological tests on microalgae (most commonly planktonic marine diatoms) are conducted widely throughout the world [1,10,33,34]. Many of these tests are conducted on single strains, which only provide information regarding so-called potential niches.…”

“…It easily reaches water bodies through surface runoff waters and this affects photosynthetic microorganism communities that are often the foundation of the functioning of aquatic ecosystems. Hence, monitoring the reactions of microorganisms to glyphosate is an important element of environmental management [1]. Since relatively little is known about the impact glyphosate has on communities of aquatic organisms, and especially those of marine organisms, the aim of this study was to assess the impact of glyphosate in the popular herbicide Roundup ® on the condition of the natural microphytobenthos in the Baltic Sea.…”

“…For example, a study showed some adverse effects on two species of Annelids at concentrations that greatly exceed the recommended field application rate of glyphosate (García-Torres et al, 2014). Besides, high concentrations of glyphosate (order of mg L -1 ) decreased the abundance of Chlorophytes in the periphyton (Gonzalez et al, 2019).…”
