Sea turtles are distributed in tropical and subtropical seas worldwide. They play several ecological roles and are considered important indicators of the health of marine ecosystems. Studying epibiotic diatoms living on turtle shells suggestively has great potential in the study of turtle behavior because diatoms are always there. However, diatom identification at the species level is time consuming, requires well-trained specialists, and there is a high probability of finding new taxa growing on turtle shells, which makes identification tricky. An alternative approach based on DNA barcoding and high throughput sequencing (HTS), metabarcoding, has been developed in recent years to identify species at the community level by using a DNA reference library. The suitabilities of morphological and molecular approaches were compared. Diatom assemblages were sampled from seven juvenile green turtles (Chelonia mydas) from Mayotte Island, France. The structures of the epibiotic diatom assemblages differed between both approaches. This resulted in different clustering of the turtles based on their diatom communities. Metabarcoding allowed better discrimination between turtles based on their epibiotic diatom assemblages and put into evidence the presence of a cryptic diatom diversity. Microscopy, for its part, provided more ecological information of sea turtles based on historical bibliographical data and the abundances of ecological guilds of the diatom species present in the samples. This study shows the complementary nature of these two methods for studying turtle behavior.

The species of the genus Craticula are widely distributed in Europe, mostly occurring in brackish, saline to heavily polluted waters. Some of the species are considered as being most tolerant to pollution. Recently, detailed observations of this genus in Macedonia have been performed. During this study, 15 taxa have been recorded. One of the species (Craticula simplex) was observed with three different morphotypes, which can be distinguished by the valve size and shape. Craticula cuspidata and C. ambigua were the most frequently recorded species in various habitats, while species C. halophila, C. germainii and C. fumantii were observed only on a single locality. The highest diversity of Craticula was observed in temporary ponds on halomorphic soils and mineral springs in Eastern Macedonia.

Mastogloia wulffii, a new diatom (Bacillariophyceae) from the west coast of Sweden

While collecting epiphytic diatom samples from the west coast of Sweden, a small Mastrogloia species has been observed and could not be matched with any of the described taxa. Based on both light and electron microscopes examination, this species has been described as new, Mastogloia wulffii sp. nov. and included in Mastogloia section Sulcatae. This species is very small with valve length not exceeding 16.3 µm. It is characterized by having a narrow, almost straight median depression on both sides of the sternum-raphe, no marginal ridge and with rounded areolae on valve mantle as well as having completely hyaline lateral sterna. A comparison with similar taxa is given. M. wulffii is a marine species growing in moderate numbers on the red alga Polyides rotunda which is widely distributed along the coast of Vrångö Island, Sweden.
