Freshwater habitat of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)

Abstract: This perspective summarizes our knowledge of the freshwater habitat of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). The article is organized by life stage and identifies areas where more research is needed. For example, little is known of the kelt and presmolt life stages despite their importance in stock maintenance. We also believe that further investigation is required to assess the relevance of variables currently used to characterize habitat and that more attention should be focussed on adult and embryo-larva habitat r… Show more

“…Potentially important spatial structures can be identified across a wide range of scales, from the properties of individual sediment particles, through the arrangement of biotopes in a reach, to the large-scale spatial context, including the configuration of drainage networks and neighbouring catchments. Salmonids are among the best-studied organisms in the context of spatial structure, because of the long-standing recognition of both their migratory movements and the use of different habitat types for spawning and for different developmental stages (Bardonnet and Baglinere, 2000). The role of barriers } especially artificial features (e.g.…”

“…The increased energy expenditure associated with obstacle passage may translate into a subsequent cost on gonad production and spawning activity. In Atlantic salmon, energetic costs cannot be recovered as adult salmon cease feeding while in fresh water (Mills, 1989;Bardonnet & Baglinière, 2000). Ultimately, energy loss associated with obstacle navigation has the potential to reduce the overall fitness of the individual.…”

“…To build the fuzzy logic Atlantic salmon parr rearing habitat model (Mocq et al, 2013), three of the most important variables defining salmon distribution and abundance, that is depth, velocity and mean substrate diameter (Armstrong, Kemp, Kennedy, Ladle & Milner, 2003;Bardonnet & Baglinière, 2000;Heggenes, 1990), were chosen as input variables, and the Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) as the output variable. Each variable domain was split into three categories defined by combinations of linear membership functions, which constitute the fuzzy sets.…”
