Freshwater Fish Biodiversity in a Large Mediterranean Basin (Guadalquivir River, S Spain): Patterns, Threats, Status and Conservation

Abstract: The Guadalquivir River Basin is one of the largest in the Iberian Peninsula and has a remarkable freshwater biodiversity. Although many studies on hydrological regimes or water quality have been conducted in this basin the biodiversity of freshwater fish, as well as their distribution and conservation status, has never been globally addressed as in other Iberian basins. In this context, we synthesized information on freshwater fish using field procedures and a bibliographic search. Fish distribution patterns a… Show more

“…Freshwater ecosystem is considered to be the most abundant and diverse system on the planet. However, it was experiencing a rapid decline in terms of biodiversity due to human activities, such as hydropower, shipping, flood control, agriculture, and urban development 1 – 5 . The Yangtze River, which is characterized by high species richness and endemism, is the longest river in China and the third longest river in the world.…”

“…The use of pesticides in agriculture has resulted in several consequences, including the decline of fish populations [ 1 ] and fish biodiversity [ 2 ]. Fish can be exposed to pesticides either through their gills or from contaminated food.…”

“…Cyprinids are the dominant freshwater fish group in Europe, and they make up 80% of fish species in Iberian rivers (Doadrio et al, 2011; Freyhof & Brooks, 2011), where they have very high levels of endemicity (>80%, Freyhof & Brooks, 2011). More than 60% of cyprinids in the Iberian Peninsula are classified as Vulnerable, Endangered or Critically Endangered according to International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) criteria (Doadrio et al, 2011; IUCN, 2022; Saez‐Gomez & Prenda, 2022). Cyprinids are well known for their high rates of hybridization, at both the intra‐ and the inter‐genera level (Scribner, Page & Bartron, 2000).…”
