Freshwater actinopterygians of the Los Rastros Formation (Triassic), Bermejo Basin, Argentina

Abstract: The present paper includes detailed descriptions of all fossil fishes known from the Los Rastros Formation (Ladinian; Bermejo Basin, Argentina). Four taxa are identified: Gualolepis carinaesquamosa n. gen. n. sp., Rastrolepis n. gen. with two species R. riojaensis n. sp. and R. latipinnata n. sp., and Challaia elongata n. comb. Gualolepis n. gen. and Rastrolepis n. gen. are incer-tae sedis actinopterygians. The opercular bones of Gualolepis resemble those in peipiaosteid acipenseriforms and the fish might be r… Show more

“…In the Ischigualasto-Villa Unión Basin in northwestern Argentina, thick Middle Triassic lacustrine/deltaic deposits of the Ischichuca/Los Rastros Formation have been extensively studied, with more recent work focusing on its body fossil content and taphonomy (Mancuso, 2003(Mancuso, , 2005Melchor, 2004;Ottone et al, 2005;Martins-Neto et al, 2005, 2006López-Arbarello et al, 2006;Ottone and Mancuso, 2006;Mancuso and Marsicano, 2008). The tetrapod record of the succession is almost exclusively composed of tracks and trackways, as the whole column is virtually devoid of tetrapod bone remains.…”

“…T riassic fishes from South America are still very poorly known, although a total of 30 species have been proposed (Gallego et al. 2004; López‐Arbarello 2004; López‐Arbarello et al. 2006).…”

“…The continental Triassic deposits of the Cuyana and Del Bermejo basins have yielded important vertebrate faunas. The fish fauna of the Del Bermejo Basin was recently revised (López‐Arbarello et al. 2006), but little work has been done on the ichthyofaunas of the Cuyana Basin in recent decades (Breglia 2000; Gallego et al.…”

“…Although a single branchiostegal ray is not a unique character of redfieldiiforms, being also present in other actinopterygians (Westoll ; Poplin , ; López‐Arbarello et al . ), the combination of characters showed by Calaichthys does not allow its inclusion within any of these actinopterygian groups. Among redfieldiiforms we consider Calaichthys tehul to be a new taxon given its unique combination of characters (see Diagnosis above).…”
