Objectives To estimate the prevalence of daytime sleepiness and circadian preferences, and to examine the extent to which caffeine consumption and Khat (a herbal stimulant) use are associated with daytime sleepiness and evening chronotype among Ethiopian college students. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 2,410 college students. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect information about sleep, behavioral risk factors such as caffeinated beverages, tobacco, alcohol, and Khat consumption. Daytime sleepiness and chronotype were assessed using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and the Horne & Ostberg Morningness /Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ), respectively. Linear and logistic regression models were used to evaluate associations. Results Daytime sleepiness (ESS≥10) was present in 26% of the students (95% CI: 24.4–27.8%) with 25.9% in males and 25.5% in females. A total of 30 (0.8%) students were classified as evening chronotypes (0.7% in females and 0.9% in males). Overall, Overall, Khat consumption, excessive alcohol use and cigarette smoking status were associated with evening chronotype. Use of any caffeinated beverages (OR=2.18; 95%CI: 0.82–5.77) and Khat consumption (OR=7.43; 95%CI: 3.28–16.98) increased the odds of evening chronotype. Conclusion The prevalence of daytime sleepiness among our study population was high while few were classified as evening chronotypes. We also found increased odds of evening chronotype with caffeine consumption and Khat use amongst Ethiopian college students. Prospective cohort studies that examine the effects of caffeinated beverages and Khat use on sleep disorders among young adults are needed.

AbstractIntroduction: Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) is a native plant from Asia that has been used as a spice and medicinal compound for thousands of years. Many of its compounds have been isolated, identified, and studied due to their pharmacological effects. Objectives: Quantify clinical trials reporting some form of therapeutic action from the use of Z. officinale plant, which are listed on the National Medicinal Plants of Interest to the Unified Health System published between 2010 and 2013 in three scientific databases (SciELO, Science Direct and Springer). Material and Methods: We searched databases using the key search term "Zingiber officinale Roscoe." A total of 757 articles were retrieved. We selected the studies dealing specifically with the term "Zingiber officinale" or related terms such as "ginger," "gingerol," "gingerols," "ginger," and "ginger". Reading the Abstract, we selected those that reported some kind of therapeutic treatment. In the last phase, the selected articles were fully read to search those proving therapeutic potentials from the study of Z. officinale. Results: Thirty articles were included in this review. Six studies reported the antioxidant activity representing the most cited therapy. Conclusion: With the results, it is expected to be possible to guide further research on the species in question, including other diseases not yet explored.Descriptors: Ginger; Therapeutic Use; Primary Health Care.

Abstract:Ginger is widely used as a spice and also an effective herbal medicine to treat gastrointestinal disorders. On the other hand, stress can induce various modulation of digestive motility. Here, we investigated ginger effects on stress-induced motility of the isolated ileum in male and female rats, in vitro. Rats (Wistar, SPF, 7-12 weeks of age, 148-393 g BW) were divided into Control (1G) and 3G groups. 3G stress (every day for 10 min) was loaded by centrifugal apparatus for 1, 3, 15 and 30 days. After the stress loading at each day, a 1 cm-long section of the ileum was isolated under barbiturate anesthesia and fixed to a Magnus-type chamber filled with Tyrode solution. Ileal movements were observed for 60 s following application of zingerone, which is also called vanillylacetone and a key component of the pungency of ginger (0.1-10 µM). Spontaneous motility movements with phasic and tonic patterns were observed in the ileum. The former was a peristalsis-like movement and the latter was a slow fluctuation of the baseline. Ginger induced enhanced effects on the rhythmic phasic motility in relation to amplitude. In the female, 3G gravity loading had no effects on the ginger-induced motility, however, suppressive effect of the ginger-induced phasic movements was clearly observed at day 15 in the male. The present study showed that gravity stress changed ginger-induced effects on phasic ileal motility in the male, but not in the female, indicating that sex differences were observed in the ginger effects modulated by stress loading.
