In this investigation distinctive self-compacting concretes (SCC) containing both marble + granite (MG) powder and hooked-end steel fibers (HESF) are investigated. A mixture of conventional SCC (reference), and other five samples containing MG and steel fiber (SF) contents are provided, i.e. 20MG, 20SF, 30MG + 10SF, 20SF and 30MG + 20 SF. Both the fresh and hardened properties of the modified self-compacting concretes are evaluated. Workability of the SCC samples represented by slump flow, L-box, V-funnel, J-ring and flowability T500 is examined. The properties of hardened state of the SCC samples at 7 and 28 days are also evaluated. Modulus of elasticity, water absortion, voids index (indicatig porosity), and specific mass are attained. Comparisons among specific strengths and consumptions of cement per compressive strengths are also provided. The SCC/30MG/10SF sample has a specific strength ∼50% higher than the conventional SCC sample. When a ratio involving porosity per cement consumption per tensile strength is evaluated, the SCC/30MG/10SF sample has this ratio ∼80% higher than the SCC reference. Additionally, the best result of consumption of cement (CC) per compressive strength (CS) (1.28x lower than the SCC reference) at 28 days is that of the SCC/30MG/10SF sample (5.03 kg/m3. MPa−1). This indicates that an environmentally friendly aspect associated with low relative cost, which is an important parameter to consider in future SCC mixture designing.

Performance of rubber mortars containing silica coated rubber

This paper investigates the influence of silica coated rubber on the performance of rubber mortars. A classical Stöber sol-gel method is applied to produce a layer of silica coating on rubber particles, which is used to partially replace the fine aggregates in concrete. The effects of the surface-modified rubber particles on the flowability, mechanical strength, capillary water absorption rate, and microstructure of mortars are examined. The results show that the silica coating on the rubber particles reduces the contact angle between the rubber particles from 120° to 103° (i.e., by 17°) and changes the hydrophobic properties from strong hydrophobicity to weak hydrophobicity. The mechanical strengths of mortars are significantly improved by the incorporation of surface-modified rubber particles, i.e., from 41.60% to 44.86% (compressive strength) and from 7.80% to 26.28% (flexural strength). In addition, the incorporation of surface modified rubber particles increases the density of the mortar’s microstructure and enhances the interfaces with its surrounding pastes.

This article presents an overview of the bibliographic picture of the design parameter’s influence on the mix proportion of self-compacting concrete with recycled aggregate. Design parameters like water-cement ratio, water to paste ratio, and percentage of superplasticizers are considered in this review. Standardization and recent research on the usage of recycled aggregates in self-compacting concrete (SCC) exploit its significance in the construction sector. The usage of recycled aggregate not only resolves the negative impacts on the environment but also prevents the usage of natural resources. Furthermore, it is necessary to understand the recycled aggregate property’s role in a mixed design and SCC properties. Design parameters are not only influenced by a mix design but also play a key role in SCC’s fresh properties. Hence, in this overview, properties of SCC ingredients, calculation of design parameters in mix design, the effect of design parameters on fresh concrete properties, and the evolution of fresh concrete properties are studied.
