Even though a reduction in pollution and CO2 emission can be achieved by the utilization of fly ash in cement-based materials, using a high volume of fly ash results in a reduction at the early age strength development and also setting time delays. In order to assess hydration mechanism and microstructural characteristics of high-volume fly ash blended cement mortars, nano-sized calcite was introduced into the mortars to evaluate the combined effect of fly ash (FA) and nano-sized calcite (NC). For this purpose, twelve mixtures in which fly ash to Portland cement ratios and NC (used as minor addition up to 5%) percentages were varied as 0.0, 0.25, 0.54, 1.0 and 0.0%, 2.5%, 5%, respectively, were designed. Consistency, setting times, compressive strength, ultrasonic pulsive velocity and SEM analysis were conducted at varied curing ages (which depends on the testing method) in terms of fresh and hardened properties and micro-structural characteristics. Experimental test results confirmed that fresh and hardened properties of standard mortars were significantly improved with the combination of both FA and NC especially at early ages. Even though decrease in early age compressive strength values was obtained as FA amount was increased, (comparing to control mixture which was 43.2 MPa at 90 days) higher compressive strength result (45.9 MPa) was obtained at 90-day curing age of mixture including 50% of FA content being utilized by NC of 2.5%.

Powder type of self-compacting concrete (SCC) needs high cement content to achieve self-compactibility, this will be undesirable in tropical climate of Sudan due to implication of high hydration heat. This paper investigates reducing cement content up to 340 Kg/m3 by blending limestone powder (LSP) up to 15 % as replacement of cement weight. Therefore, fifteen mixes having maximum powder content (P) of 400 Kg/m3 have been carried out with four water/powder ratios (W/P) (0.35, 0.4, 0.43 and 0.45). Fresh properties and compressive strength of SCC were measured. Results show most of the mixes have achieved self-compactibility in the fresh stages. However, the compressive strength of the mixes has been reduced with increased level of LSP replacing cement. This reduction in strength is caused by dilution effect of adds LSP.

The false setting is when cement stiffens prematurely in a few minutes after adding water. Some variables could cause false setting in CPI-S-32 Portland cement, for example, alkali concentration in the cement, the formation of alite (C3S) with low reactivity, and cement storage temperature and time in silos. Temperature increases cause calcium sulfate dihydrate to dehydrate, forming hemihydrate (CaSO4.0.5H2O) or anhydrite (CaSO4), which causes the false setting. In this study, the influence of cement storage temperature (100, 105, 110, 120, and 130 °C) combined with the cement storage time (30, 60, and 120 min) in a silo was studied regarding the CPI-S-32 false setting behavior. It was verified that temperatures above 110 °C and storage time above 60 min are conditions that favor the false setting of CPI-S-32 cement. Physicochemical analysis, TG/DTG, XRF, and XRD were applied as complementary analyzes for the false setting assays of CPI-S-32.
