Purpose This study investigated the effect of dynamic pitch in target speech on older and younger listeners' speech recognition in temporally modulated noise. First, we examined whether the benefit from dynamic-pitch cues depends on the temporal modulation of noise. Second, we tested whether older listeners can benefit from dynamic-pitch cues for speech recognition in noise. Last, we explored the individual factors that predict the amount of dynamic-pitch benefit for speech recognition in noise. Method Younger listeners with normal hearing and older listeners with varying levels of hearing sensitivity participated in the study, in which speech reception thresholds were measured with sentences in nonspeech noise. Results The younger listeners benefited more from dynamic pitch for speech recognition in temporally modulated noise than unmodulated noise. Older listeners were able to benefit from the dynamic-pitch cues but received less benefit from noise modulation than the younger listeners. For those older listeners with hearing loss, the amount of hearing loss strongly predicted the dynamic-pitch benefit for speech recognition in noise. Conclusions Dynamic-pitch cues aid speech recognition in noise, particularly when noise has temporal modulation. Hearing loss negatively affects the dynamic-pitch benefit to older listeners with significant hearing loss.

Frequency-specific auditory brainstem responses to tone bursts (2–31.5 kHz) and tuning curves were recorded in 8 male rats during their entire life. No significant threshold elevation occurred during the 1st year. Mean age at onset of hearing loss was 20 months, with individual variations ranging from 14 up to 23 months. In most animals, threshold elevations were limited to 20 and 31.5 kHz. At age of 18–23 months, 3 rats were treated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa exotoxin A. After instillation, threshold elevation occurred at all frequencies, followed by near-total recovery at low frequencies, but only partial reversibility at high frequencies. It is concluded that aging-related hearing changes in Sprague-Dawley albino rats start at different ages, particularly comprising high frequencies and encroaching on the middle and low areas with increasing age.

An experiment was conducted to further explore the effect of ageing on speech understanding under degraded listening conditions. Two groups of subjects, aged 20-39 years and 50-75 years were tested. Measurements were made of hearing thresholds in each ear from 0.25-10kHz, consonant discrimination in quiet and continuous speech spectrum noise (S/N= -10 dB) and monophonic and stereophonic frequency selectivity. Neither group would have been diagnosed as hearing-impaired. Nonetheless, the older group had significantly higher hearing thresholds, which increased systematically with frequency. Poorer consonant discrimination in noise was observed for the older group. This outcome was correlated with high-frequency thresholds, not with age. There was no between-group difference in stereophonic frequency selectivity, minimizing the possibility of age-related changes in central auditory processing. Monophonic frequency selectivity, an index of cochlear processing, was correlated with speech understanding. The results support the conclusion that observed age-related effects are secondary to cochlear dysfunction.
