Frequency, Risk Factors, and Outcome of Active Tuberculosis following Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation

Abstract: We aimed to investigate the frequency, risk factors, and outcome of active tuberculosis (TB) after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). This retrospective, nested, case-control study reviewed data from 6236 patients who received allo-HSCT from January 2008 to December 2018 at a single center; thirty-three patients (0.5%) with active TB and 99 controls without active TB after allo-HSCT were identified. We performed propensity score matching by randomly selecting 3 controls for each id… Show more

“…Additionally, it has been reported that patients with impaired immune function and structural lung disease are more susceptible to fungal and other microbial infections after PTB and NTM-PD (Wu and Holland, 2015;Zeng et al, 2020). Specifically, when an immune-impaired host has a mixed infection of pulmonary infiltration, the successful diagnosis of co-existing opportunistic infections using conventional diagnostic methods is challenging (Pan et al, 2019).…”

“…The allo-HSCT cells are collected from normal donors without tumor cell contamination and have an antitumor immunological effect due to the low relapse rate and high disease-free survival (DFS). However, under allo-HSCT treatment, patients should take immunosuppressants for long periods of time to avoid immunologic rejection, which may cause diverse infections, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoan [ 4 ].…”

“…Foram analisados 33 indivíduos com diagnóstico de TB em atividade e 99 sem TB (grupo controle). História de TB prévia foi um fator de risco independente, não foram observadas diferenças em relação a sobrevida geral, mortalidade e reincidência de doença de base (59).…”
