Frequency Optimization Models for Reducing Overcrowding Discomfort

Abstract: One of the most important aspects of improving public bus transport attractiveness is reducing overcrowding in buses. However, most of the mathematical models that focus on designing bus services minimize the total social cost without considering the overcrowding discomfort. Further, they are mostly non-linear in nature and use heuristic and meta-heuristic approaches. Thus, they are difficult to understand and use by practitioners. This work addresses these gaps through models that include overcrowding discomf… Show more

“…Researchers as far back as the last century have focused on determining bus departure frequencies based on passenger demand (Ceder, 1984). Establishing a reasonable bus timetable helps reduce unnecessary waiting time of passengers (Wang et al, 2017), mitigating road and in-vehicle congestion (Agrawal et al, 2020;Wang et al, 2020), lowering operational costs (Gkiotsalitis et al, 2022) and reducing energy consumption (Bie et al, 2021;Ji et al, 2022), etc. This ultimately promotes more efficient bus management and operations.…”

“…Thus, in order to avoid the risk of getting infected, it is highly likely and desirable that for some time, maintaining physical (social) distancing becomes a requirement for all public vehicles and seating, standing spaces are clearly marked. To achieve the required physical distancing in the already short-in-supply transit fleet (Agrawal et al 2020), this study attempts to evaluate the requirement of an operational fleet of public transport immediately after the relaxation in the lockdown and better prepare for the situation. A better preparation of the public transport operators will also avoid the overcrowding at the platforms.…”

“…In many countries, overcrowding management programs are installed to reduce the number of NU-ED visits. Defining these NU visits is the first step in many of these programs [13] [14].…”
