Frequency of human platelet antigens (HPA)‐1, ‐2, ‐5 and ‐15 in Brazilian blood donors and establishment of a panel of HPA‐typed donors

Abstract: A record of HPA-typed donors would enable rapid identification and selection of donors when HPA-compatible platelets are required for transfusion.

“…In this study, the frequencies of the genotypes and alleles of the 28 HPA systems in the Chinese Han population were obtained. The data of HPA-1 to 21w were consistent with previous investigations in the Chinese Han population [8,14,15,24], but it was different from the Caucasian population [19,21]. The HPA-21bw allele was found in the study and our previous report [15], but it was rare in the Caucasian population [26].…”

“…Therefore, some primer pairs for these HPA-bw alleles may need to confirm by the standard samples with -bw alleles in the future. The distribution of HPA genotypes is geographically and ethnically restricted and the genotype frequencies of the HPA-1 to -21w in the different populations were previously reported [18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25]. In this study, the frequencies of the genotypes and alleles of the 28 HPA systems in the Chinese Han population were obtained.…”

“…There are significant variations in the prevalence of platelet antigens, particularly in the HPA-1 system between different peoples and ethnic groups [8]. These variations may be the cause of platelet all immunization when a new platelet antigen is delivered during a blood transfusion.…”

“…It is related to the degree of variability in HPAs between donors and recipients, whose frequencies vary among different populations worldwide. Among the Brazilian population, considerable data on HPA prevalence is available for Caucasians, those of African descent and Amazonian Indians (Castro et al , ), as well as blood donors (Conti et al , ; Mangerona et al , ). However, the allele frequency data among Amazonian blood donors is still lacking.…”
