Frequency of HER2/neu overexpression in adenocarcinoma of the gastrointestinal system

Abstract: HER2/neu protein is credibly overexpressed in colon and gastric adenocarcinomas in immunohistochemistry. There is significant association between grade of tumor and HER2/neu protein overexpression.

“…In our series we found 26.6 % positivity for membranous Her-2/ neu staining. On contrary to this, two studies from the same region observed higher percentage of membranous expression of Her-2/ neu in colorectal carcinomas, 74.1 % ( n  = 31) and 42 % ( n  = 100) respectively [13, 22, 23]. The reason for the difference in the rate might be due to different scoring protocols where they took into account only the membranous expression of Her-2 /neu staining and did not consider the cytoplasmic expression.…”

“…Moreover, a very few studies have been published from this region regarding Her-2/neu expression in colorectal adenocarcinoma [13][14][15]. Therefore, in this study we attempted to know the expression of Her-2/neu in colorectal tumors in our population which might prove in future a useful prognostic factor and worthy therapeutic target for colorectal carcinoma.…”

“…Although cytoplasmic expression of Her/2 has been stated in many other tumors as colon adenocarcinoma [23] and Ewing's sarcoma [24], possible correlation of this expression with patient endurance and response to therapy has not been evaluated. Wilms' tumor is a curable disease and more than 90% of patients live 4 years after diagnosis [25] [26].…”
