Frequency of Hashimoto's thyroiditis in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus

Abstract: A total of 1419 children with type 1 diabetes mellitus was investigated in order to assess the true frequency of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), diagnosed by microsomal and/or thyroglobulin autoantibodies, by ultrasound and in many cases also by fine needle biopsy. According to these criteria, 55 cases (3.9%) of HT were identified, a number significantly higher (P < 0.0001) than the distribution reported in the normal paediatric population. No typical antibody pattern was seen prior to the onset of HT, nor was a… Show more

“…The recent extensive Ab screening study in patients with T1DM has raised awareness of the association of T1DM with organ-specific autoimmunity [29]. The reported prevalence of thyroid autoimmunity in young T1DM patients ranges between 3% and 50% [10,[30][31][32][33], while it is 3.4%-7% in the general paediatric population [34,35]. The association of T1DM and AITD is highly dependent on age, sex and ethnicity [36].…”

“…In children with type 1 diabetes, the reported prevalence of autoimmune thyroiditis is 4% [41] and that of associated thyroid antibodies (thyroid peroxidase [TPO] antibodies, thyroglobulin [TG] antibodies) 16% [42]. Approximately 25% of adults with autoimmune diabetes have serological evidence of autoimmune thyroiditis.…”
