“…The above correlations support suggestion that Hsp40s may participate in the pathomechanisms of RA in humans. A correlation between the level of humoral response and Steinbrocker's stages was demonstrated previously for another class of Hsps, the Hsp70 (Zlacka et al 2006).…”

“…Recently, a number of studies have investigated a role of the heat shock proteins (Hsps) in T-cell regulation in chronic inflammatory diseases and their outcome indicates that T-cell responses to Hsps have disease-suppressive activities through production of anti-inflammatory cytokines (van Eden et al 2005;Zlacka et al 2006;Wieten et al 2007;van Eden et al 2007).…”

“…Antibodies targeting HSP-70 have been detected in sera from patients with sensory neuronal hearing loss [7], systemic lupus erythematosus [8], and juvenile idiopathic arthritis [9]. When applying HSP-70 antibodies together with an agent inducing allergic dermatitis, mice did not develop the disease but gained systemic antigen-specific tolerance, which could also be adoptively transferred [10].…”

“…Notably, anti-HSP70 autoantibodies have been detected in 94% of patients with esophageal cancer but less commonly in other cancers (11% and 20% for gastric and colon) [25]. Anti-HSP70 antibodies have been detected in subgroups of patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis [26], multiple sclerosis [27], Graves's disease [28], Behçet's disease [29], and sudden sensorineural hearing loss [30] but the significance of this in these diseases has yet to be determined.…”

In a cohort of patients with an autoimmune disease, namely systemic sclerosis (SSc), we show that whereas lung inflammation in the absence of smoke exposure can lead to an IgM anti-HSP70 autoimmune response but no or very limited RF response, the switch to IgG anti-HSP70 is observed primarily in smokers with LD.…”
