Frequency division color characterization apparatus for anisotropic leaky mode light modulators

Abstract: This paper presents an optical apparatus for characterizing frequency multiplexing of color in leaky mode, anisotropic waveguide modulators. This type of characterization is particularly useful for informing the design of full color holographic video displays. The primary function of the apparatus is to map the frequency response and angular overlap of red, green, and blue outputs. The apparatus also allows measurements of other parameters such as scan center frequency, optical and RF bandwidth, and scan linea… Show more

“…SAW modulators are characterized using an automated rotary stage to record the relationship , , which is a function of defined above and Snell's law. Figure 4 depicts a typical datamap [10] for a modulator whose TE1-like guided mode is illuminated. Other modes, such as TE0 or TE2, have different characteristics and can be excited by changing the angle of incidence of the illumination.…”

“…Prism couplers may include Metricon prism couplers, used to determine waveguide index, thickness, and sometimes loss, though the loss may also be measured photographically in beta-phase waveguides [40]. In addition to commercial couplers, the authors have developed and refined a semiautomatic characterization apparatus (Figure 9a) to create 'data maps' (Figure 9b), which illustrate leaky mode output as a function of frequency and output angle [41]. This prism coupler plots output power as a function of output angle and input frequency.…”

“…This approach did find an application, in particular, in 2-dimensional laser anemometry [5,6]. The task of controlling three-color optical radiation becomes acute in many areas of science and technology (see, e.g., [7][8][9]). As a rule, this problem is solved by using several AO-cells or by a single cell which is controlled by several acoustic frequencies [10].…”
