Frequency-dependent orthotropic damping properties of Nomex honeycomb composites

Abstract: In this paper, the orthotropic damping behavior of Nomex honeycomb composites and its causes are investigated. The needed specimen sizes for the measurement of the frequency-dependent transverse shear moduli (TSM) and fundamental damping coefficients of the honeycomb cores were analyzed at first. Then, the effects of cell side length and beam orientation on the orthotropic damping properties were explored. The results reveal that relatively high TSM (GLT) and damping values (ηWT) can be obtained by decreasing … Show more

“…Equation (1) can be written as, 20 Where h and b are the total thickness and width of the sandwich panel, respectively. The parameters h s and b s are the thickness and width of the face sheet, respectively; h c and b c are the thickness and width of the core, respectively.…”

“…19 Also, as with other honeycomb cores, a Nomex core exhibits an anisotropic response. 7,20 It is often necessary to describe test sample data using statistical models, thereby accounting for the scatter in results due to manufacturing and scaling effects. 21 A Weibull statistical model is useful for predicting the experimental values as function of shape and scale parameters and a gamma function, based on the experimental dataset.…”

“…Aramid honeycomb, such as Nomex ® , whose mechanical properties show orthotropic anisotropy due to the unique close-packed hexagonal structure [1], is a porous material made of aramid fiber and phenolic resin [2]. It exhibits good performance, such as high specific strength, excellent flame retardancy, good corrosion resistance, and shock absorption [3], which makes it a promising core material for lightweight collision energy absorption structures in aerospace engineering like fairing, flap and hatch door, and in marine engineering like hull of racing boat and fireproof bulkhead [4][5][6][7][8].…”
