Frequency, demographics and risk (according to tumour type or site) of cancer-associated thrombosis among patients seen at outpatient DVT clinics

Abstract: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a clinically important complication for both hospitalised and ambulatory cancer patients. In the current study, the frequency, demographics and risk (according to tumour site) of VTE were examined among patients seen at outpatient DVT (deep-vein thrombosis) clinics. Of 10,015 VTE cases, 1,361 were diagnosed with cancer, for an overall rate of cancer-associated VTE of 13.6% in this outpatient population. Patients with cancer-associated VTE were significantly older than cancer-fre… Show more

“…Breast cancer-associated VTE accounts for approximately 17% of cancerrelated VTEs presenting to anticoagulation clinics. 4 It is also associated with increased disease recurrence, 5 but more importantly, reduced survival 5,6 among patients for whom prognosis is otherwise comparatively good.…”

“…Clinically, tumor neutrophil infiltration is associated with poor metastasis and prognosis, mainly in renal cancer, melanoma, liver cancer, colorectal cancer, lung cancer, and head and neck cancer [12,13]. Wang et al found that neutrophil infiltration in squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue is associated with lymph node metastasis, clinical stage, and increased tumor recurrence risk [14].…”

“…Panessha et al 20 reported that the rate of cancer-related VTE managed in outpatient DVT clinics in the UK for AYAs between 18 and 31 was 2.6%. Kayser-Gatchalian and Kayser 21 reported a higher incidence of VTE for patients aged 20-39 years with intracranial tumors compared to those aged 10-19 years.…”
