Frequency, clinical and laboratory features of thyroiditis in girls with Turner's syndrome

Abstract: A total of 478 patients, mean age 15.5 (3.6-25.3) years, suffering from Turner's syndrome, were studied in order to determine the frequency of autoimmune thyroiditis, which is defined as the presence of antithyroid antibodies (AT-Ab) and typical ultrasound findings. We found 106 (22.2%) patients positive for AT-Ab and of those 49 (10%) also had positive ultrasound findings, and were therefore considered to be affected by thyroiditis. This frequency is significantly higher (p < 0.001) than that seen in the norm… Show more

“…By comparison, the prevalence of positive thyroid autoantibodies was high in Japanese women with Turner syndrome in this study. In previous reports from european countries, the incidence of thyroiditis in girls with Turner syndrome was between 10% and 24% [4][5][6]. The frequency of thyroid abnormalities increases with age in Turner syndrome as well as in the general population.…”

“…11,12 Short stature is almost universal. 13 Additional features are common [14][15][16][17][18][19][20] and are listed in Table 1. Interestingly, the individual's phenotype appears to be dependent on the exact genotype and even the parental origin of the remaining X chromosome.…”
