Three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of human body has wide applications, for example, for customized design of clothes and digital avatar production. Existing vision-based systems for 3D body reconstruction require users to wear minimal or extreme-tight clothes in front of cameras, and thus suffer from privacy problems. In this work, we explore a novel solution based on a sparse number of soft sensors on a standard garment, and use it for capturing 3D upper body shape. We utilize the maximal stretching range by modeling the nonlinear performance profile for individual sensors. The body shape can be dynamically reconstructed by analyzing the relationship between mesh deformation and sensor reading, with a learning-based approach. The wearability and flexibility of our prototype allow its use in indoor/outdoor environments and for long-term breath monitoring. Our prototype has been extensively evaluated by multiple users with different body sizes and the same user for multiple days. The results show that our garment prototype is comfortable to wear, and achieves the state-of-the-art reconstruction performance with the advantages in privacy projection and application scenarios.

Single-board computers and microcontrollers such as Raspberry Pi or Arduino are nowadays used in a broad range of applications. Their relatively low power consumption and low price, compact dimensions and relative ease to program them make them suitable for diverse areas of measuring and controlling various parameters. In the textile area, however, such single-board computers are still less often used than in other projects, in spite of their aforementioned advantages in comparison to other solutions. Here we give an overview of the differences between single-board computers and single-board microcontrollers in general, compare different versions and give examples which projects are reported in the scientific literature, in design or in the maker scene, enabling researchers, designers and makers to decide which future projects necessitate which single circuit boards.

Our paper discusses the design-led processes in a project starting as multidisciplinary, focusing on three serendipitous cases that influenced the outcomes and the textile-design-research path taken in the overall project. The work presented here revolved around semiconductive cotton, suitable for textile design, and examines it from the design team perspective. This paper identifies and discusses three cases, as they had considerable weight on the project path. In order to understand these cases, we evaluated them based on a model for a serendipitous experience. The follow-ups to the serendipitous connections gave empowerment to the design research team, increasing their ownership of the research results. Relaxing boundaries between disciplines and varying routines have been highly relevant factors in the new knowledge generation. Ability to perform a consented and significant diversion to the research path was crucial for reacting to the serendipitous discovery and establishing the research space of the interdisciplinary project.
