Frequency and predictors of acute ischaemic lesions on brain magnetic resonance imaging in young patients with a clinical diagnosis of transient ischaemic attack

Abstract: In young patients with a clinical TIA 15% demonstrated acute DWI lesions on brain MRI, with an event pattern highly suggestive of an embolic origin. Except for the association with previous infarctions there was no clear clinical predictor for acute ischaemic lesions, which indicates the need to obtain MRI in young individuals with TIA.

“…The frequency of positive DWI findings varied from 9 to 67% between studies [6]. In young patients (median age 46 (40,51) years) with a clinical TIA 15% demonstrated acute DWI lesions on brain MRI [11]. In our study, the frequency of an acute DWI lesion was 29.5% in TIA.…”

“…Klinický obraz je neobyčejně různorodý a potenciálně život ohrožující. Ischemické mozkové příhody představují nejčastější relevantní klinický projev předpokládané paradoxní embolie a vyskytuje se až u 45 % pacientů s kryptogenní ischemickou cévní mozkovou příhodou [22][23][24].…”

“…Stroke represents the largest proportion of papers published, including those on pathophysiology , acute stroke management and the outcome of patients who have suffered stroke . Stroke is a worldwide problem, but its prevalence varies and may reflect both the genetic and environmental contributions to stroke, both in turn reflecting the known risk factors for stroke.…”
