“…We did not identify any clinicopathological factors associated with the number of CTCs other than smoking index. However, our results on the association between CTC counts and smoking history are inconsistent with the data presented by Dandachi et al (6). We speculate that our prospectively recruited series was adenocarcinoma-dominant (84% of all cases), which would confound any correlation with the smoking index.…”

“…Although CTC counts at each clinical stage did not show any significant differences, our data show that CTCs were detected in patients with non-metastatic lung cancer, which indicates the possible utility of this device in early stage lung cancer. CTC studies targeting non-metastatic lung cancer are limited and the CTC detection rate (positive rate) varies (6,7,(11)(12)(13). As we did not confirm whether the cells captured on our device are cancer cells using other methods such as morphological examination under white light in all cases, we did not define the number of CTCs as positive in this study.…”

“…That epithelial cells are misidentified as CTCs by CellSearch when measured in the PV during surgery would explain previous findings summarized in Table 3. The CTC presence during or shortly after surgery in the peripheral circulation is strongly associated with disease recurrence and recurrence-free survival (7,9,10,(24)(25)(26)(27)(28). Suspected CTCs identified in the PV were also shown to be associated with survival, but the association is less well defined (16,(29)(30)(31).…”

“…CTCs have been shown an independent prognostic marker of survival for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6). In early stage NSCLC, the presence of CTCs detected in the peripheral blood after surgery has been associated with a shorter time to recurrence (7)(8)(9)(10)(11). Of note, in advanced disease, CTCs are only observed in around 30% of patients with NSCLC.…”
