“…Though flood mainly affects flood plains, it causes fatalities and damage crops, homesteads, livestock, plants, and infrastructure through inundation (Whitehead et al, 2015). However, It also creates extensive riverbank erosion (Roy et al, 2019).…”

“…Thus, several advanced warning models are widely used in developed countries for flood forecasting. This warning is circulated to the media for broadcast and government and non-government organizations (Khan et al, 2018;Roy et al, 2019;Sai et al, 2018). Most of the research in this category suggested models that can be used for flood forecasting and in the case of a long-term warning, the studies predicted that the severity and frequency of floods in Bangladesh would increase in the coming 10 to 30 years.…”

“…In Bangladesh, pre‐monsoon flash floods occur almost every year in some parts of the northeast Haor basin between March and May while riverine flooding occurs between June and September. The latter is also known as the monsoon flood (Roy et al ., 2019). During the pre‐monsoon season (March–May), the north‐eastern part of Bangladesh often experiences flash floods, a major natural hazard in that region and one that vastly affects lives, property, and croplands.…”

“…During the pre‐monsoon season (March–May), the north‐eastern part of Bangladesh often experiences flash floods, a major natural hazard in that region and one that vastly affects lives, property, and croplands. Flash floods damage thousands of hectares (ha) of boro rice crops, considered a staple crop in the country (Ahmed et al ., 2017; Roy et al ., 2019; Hossain et al ., 2017; Humanitarian Response, 2017). Agricultural wages also sometimes decline during the flooding months in inundated districts (Banerjee, 2007).…”

“…Flash floods in the region can rapidly inundate low‐lying areas and usually occur within minutes to hours after excessive rainfall, with their duration being less than 6 hours (Sumon & Islam, 2013). Due to the geographic location of the wetlands, these recurring floods are a common occurrence for haor residents adjacent to the hills, and play a devastating and widespread role in the region (Ferdushi et al., 2019; Haque et al., 2021; Kamal et al., 2018; Roy et al., 2019). On average, severe flash floods occur once every 3 years in the haor region (Chakraborty et al., 2021), and it is important to address the question of why recent flash floods have played a persistently destructive role in the haor basin.…”
